The Toyota Avalon has earned a reputation as a comfortable, reliable, and long-lasting sedan. However, as with any vehicle, some common issues can develop over time and mileage. At Precision Auto Care in nearby San Leandro, CA, we specialize in diagnosing and repairing the most frequent problems reported by Toyota Avalon owners in the Oakland area and throughout the East Bay.

Whether you have a first-generation XX10 Avalon from the late 90s or a current fifth-gen model, our expert Toyota technicians have the knowledge and equipment to get your car back on the road and running smoothly.

Oil Leaks from VVT System

On 2005-2012 Avalons, a common repair is oil leaks stemming from the variable valve timing (VVT) system. The VVT uses oil pressure to adjust camshaft position for optimal performance and economy. But the oil control valves and seals wear out over time, allowing leaks.

Signs of a VVT leak include oil under the engine, burning oil smells from the exhaust, and potentially a VVT-related check engine light. Our techs will accurately diagnose the leak source and replace worn gaskets, seals and solenoids as needed to prevent damage to the timing components.

Worn Suspension Parts

The Avalon is prized for its smooth, quiet ride. But worn suspension components like struts, shocks and bushings can degrade ride quality over time. Symptoms include floaty handling, bottoming out over bumps, nose dive when braking, and clunks when turning.

We thoroughly inspect shocks/struts for leaks and bushings/mounts for excessive play. Any worn parts are replaced with quality aftermarket or Toyota OEM components to restore proper suspension function and comfortable ride quality.

Oxygen Sensor Failure

The oxygen (O2) sensors monitor exhaust gases to provide feedback on the fuel mixture. When sensors fail from contamination or wear, you may notice reduced fuel economy, rough idle, hesitation and a check engine light.

We’ll scan for diagnostic trouble codes pointing to specific sensors, then test those sensors’ outputs. Faulty oxygen sensors are replaced with new Toyota or equivalent parts to keep your emissions control system working properly.

Water Pump Leaks

The water pump circulates coolant to prevent engine overheating. On 2005-2012 Avalons, the pump has been prone to seepage around 100k miles. Ignoring a leak can lead to overheating and severe engine damage.

Common symptoms include cooling system leaks, sweet coolant smells and perhaps pump noise or check engine light. Our technicians will diagnose the issue and replace your Avalon’s water pump along with the timing belt if needed. This prevents expensive engine damage down the road.

Transmission Problems

The Avalon’s automatic transmission is very durable, but may develop issues like harsh shifts, shuddering, slipping or trouble engaging gears as it ages. Performance problems are often fixed with a thorough fluid flush and filter change. But internal issues can require transmission removal and rebuild.

If your Avalon’s transmission is misbehaving, we’ll perform a full diagnostic scan and fluid inspection. Catching problems early makes them much more affordable to fix. We can get your transmission operating smoothly again, whether it needs new solenoids or a complete overhaul.

Brake System Issues

Safe, consistent braking is a must. Common brake problems include worn pads/rotors causing noise or pulsation; spongy pedal from fluid leaks; and ABS/Brake warning lights indicating electronic issues.

We thoroughly test Avalon brake components like calipers, rotors, pads and hydraulic systems for wear, damage or contamination. Any issues are resolved with quality replacement parts to restore safe, confident braking. We also flush brake fluid to Toyota specifications.

Squeaking Serpentine Belt

The serpentine belt powers vital accessories like the alternator. As it ages, dryness and cracking can cause squealing or chirping noises, often around 100k miles. If unchecked, belt failure can leave you stranded.

We inspect for glazing, missing chunks of rubber or other belt wear, and replace it if needed. This simple service prevents getting stuck with disabled charging or steering systems. The new belt keeps your Avalon’s accessories running smoothly and quietly.
