Modern passenger vehicles have rack and pinion steering because of the simplicity and inexpensive manufacture of the system. Rack and pinion systems give the best feel for the road. However, they’re not adjustable, so a worn rack needs replacement.

The steering rack is a long, toothed piece. A pinion gear at the steering shaft’s end engages the rack. The pinion gear moves the rack in the desired direction when the steering wheel turns. Fewer parts in this system reduce friction, giving a better steering feel.

How to know if your car might need a steering rack replacement

If you notice anything wrong with the power steering system as you drive, there may be a problem with the steering rack. Many parts may cause the same symptoms. Here are some signs you may need a new steering rack.

Looseness in the Steering

If your vehicle wanders, it may be a faulty steering rack. But incorrect wheel alignment can cause the same phenomenon. If your tires are worn more on the inside or the outside, the problem could be wheel alignment. We will check the wheel alignment before replacing any expensive parts.

Grinding Noises

If there is insufficient lubrication, internal parts of the rack will make metal-to-metal contact and cause grinding noises when you turn. Grinding contact in the power steering system will create metal filings circulating through the system, clogging filters and causing seal failure. When replacing steering gear parts, we thoroughly flush the system and install a new filter.

Burning Oil Smell

Burning oil can come from a plethora of components in the engine compartment. If the burning smell comes from a leaking power steering rack, continued driving can cause expensive part failure. No leak should be deferred.

Leaking Power Steering Fluid

A power steering leak will result in a low fluid level, causing harder-than-usual steering. Metal-to-metal contact will result in part failure and a sizeable repair bill without sufficient fluid. A damaged seal in the rack and pinion may be the source.

Repair

We can replace rack and pinion gears with rebuilt units. Some units have a good record of success when technicians rebuild them, while others do not. Sometimes grooves wear into the control valve housing, resulting in a loss of power assist after cold startups. Rebuilt units are usually upgraded with a nickel-plated sleeve to correct the wear and tear to prevent it from happening again.

We have considerable experience repairing steering systems. Our dedicated auto repair experts will diagnose your steering concerns and replace only worn parts. Call us or visit our website to get a quote and book an appointment for a steering gear inspection or any service you require.
