Frequent problems with Subaru boxer engines are leaking head gaskets or burned exhaust valves. Either situation will result in poor running, overheating, and a tow to our shop. Should you notice your Legacy overheating, do not drive it any further. Have it towed to our shop, where we can remediate your engine difficulties without an extravagant monetary outlay. If you continue to drive it until it doesn’t go any further, you may have to replace expensive components, even the entire engine. Subaru engines are made of aluminum to save weight and increase gas mileage. The downside of this is that aluminum readily warps when overheated. If the overheating is for a short time, machine work may be able to save the parts by truing the mating surfaces. If the warpage is too extensive, a new component is needed.

Minor service mainly involves engine oil and filter replacement and tire service; major service is more complex and comprehensive. As well as lubricating moving parts, fluids remove and retain contamination. Fluids should be drained and refilled before they are inundated with contamination. Antifreeze maintains the engine at a constant temperature and doesn’t freeze at low temperatures. Transmission fluid slips when necessary, such as when the vehicle is stopped, then conducts power to the axle when called for. Differential fluid reduces axle gear wear. Brake fluid is the intermediary to send a force to the brake pads. Power steering fluid allows the power steering mechanism to work.

Replace spark plugs on the manufacturer’s schedule. They wear out, resulting in bad fuel mileage.

Timing belts connect the cams to the crankshaft and trigger valve timing. An engine rebuild may result if this belt breaks. Replacement of your Subaru’s timing belt at 100 thousand miles is good practice, as is replacing coolant hoses. A ruptured coolant hose will leave you waiting for a tow truck.

In addition to the items usually done on a major service, our technician will look your car over for developing problems, for instance, worn-out shock absorbers and windshield wipers.

We have state-licensed and ASE-approved technicians who perform these procedures frequently. Call us or visit our website to get a quote and book an appointment for a major service or any auto repair you need.
