How Brakes Work

The brakes rely on the brake fluid to increase your foot’s pressure. Stepping on the brake pedal causes a master cylinder piston to force the brake fluid downstream. The pressure created at the master cylinder goes to the brake components at each wheel, actuating the brakes. This allows you to stop a heavy vehicle with a small amount of effort.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is specialized to do this one thing well. It transmits the force from the master cylinder to the brake pads, which brake your car by causing friction against the rotors. If you notice a spongy brake pedal, there may be a brake fluid leak or air in the system. Fresh brake fluid is clear. Dirty fluid suggests brake fluid replacement. Brake fluid absorbs the heat braking action generates; it will not do this well if contaminated. Brake fluid needs service every two years to prevent these problems.

Leaks

Hoses join the master cylinder to the calipers. A soft brake pedal or a brake pedal that goes to the floor may indicate a leak in these hoses or the master cylinder. Air in the system may also cause a soft brake pedal.

Why Brake Fluid Flushes are Important

Your brake fluid has three problems, leading to flushes:

  1. When you brake, heat is created, which deteriorates brake fluid.
  2. Your braking system is open to the air, which contains water. Hot fluid readily absorbs moisture, which can cause your brake parts to corrode.
  3. Brake parts shed particles, which contaminate the fluid.

How Brake Fluid Flushes are Done

-Old, worn, and depleted hydraulic fluid is drained

-Check For Rusted Braking Components: We will clean out corroded parts if possible. We may need to replace heavily rusted components

-We fill your system with fresh fluid and bleed air from the system

Brake fluid flushes and brake bleeding are two different procedures. Brake flushing involves draining the fluid and replacing it with fresh fluid. Brake bleeding just means removing air bubbles.

How Often Do I Need a Brake Fluid Change?

Corrosion will cause damage to your brake components, leading to replacement. Regular brake fluid service can prevent these issues. Factories recommend brake fluid flushes every two years.

Your vehicle year, make, and model may affect your brake fluid flush schedule. Consult your owner’s manual or speak with our mechanic for information on your vehicle.

These are indicators you need fresh brake fluid.

-Spongy Brake Pedal or Pedal Goes to the Floor

Air will enter the system if the fluid level in the master cylinder is low, leading to a soft brake pedal.

Dashboard Warning Light

If the brake fluid level drops below a certain level in the master cylinder, this light will illuminate. After fixing the leak that caused the fluid level to drop, fluid needs to be added. A leak will also allow air into the lines, so our technician will bleed the system.
