Hybrid Battery Issues are Common on Toyota Prius

There are two batteries in a hybrid car: a small one to provide electrical energy for the vehicle’s electrical components and a hybrid battery to power the car when it’s charge is sufficient. If the smaller battery is discharged, the vehicle is still drivable. If the hybrid battery is dead, you won’t be able to drive your Prius until you replace the battery or have it reconditioned.

How Do You Know You Have a Hybrid Battery Problem

According to the manufacturer, hybrid cars should last for the vehicle’s life. However, faults can develop, and it’s helpful to know the warning signs of a dying battery. Most hybrid batteries will need replacement after eight to ten years. Your Prius hybrid battery will let you know when it needs replacement. But you need to become familiar with warning signs of an impending problem. Otherwise, the day your car refuses to turn on will be when you realize there’s a snag.

Here are five indicators:

Fewer Miles to the Gallon

Several factors can affect your gas mileage. Suppose you fill up more frequently than usual, or your gasoline engine runs most of the time. In that case, it could indicate that the hybrid battery is not being charged to its capacity or it doesn’t retain charge for as long as when it was new.

Erratic Engine Operation

If your gasoline engine runs irregularly, it’s another indication of a battery problem. Some control faults could cause the problem, but it is most likely to be a sign of a dying battery. The engine operating more frequently than usual is something you need to have checked out.

State of Charge

The driver information display shows you the hybrid battery state of charge. Fluctuations in the state of charge are an indication of a problem. The charging system could be at fault; a failing battery is more often the cause.

Charging Problems

The hybrid battery should lose its charge at a predictable speed. The following troubles will shorten the life of the battery:

Overcharging

Undercharging

The battery discharges at a high rate

Parasitic drain

Issues such as corroded or shorted wiring will also cause the charging system to function erratically. If your car is low when you start it in the morning after leaving it fully charged, your battery may be bad, the charging system has failed, or you have a parasitic drain.

Unusual Noises

If the cooling fan constantly runs your battery is overheating, which will shorten its life. It would be best if you got it checked as soon as possible or the problem will worsen.

Suppose you experience any of the above symptoms. In that case, our expert technicians can diagnose the fault and advise you if you need a new battery or some other service.
