Tess and Paul’s camp Namanu wedding was a dream to photograph. They put so much thought into every detail, and even designed their own wedding logo and map. Summer camp was a special place to me as a kid and camp weddings just make me so damn happy! Every time I photograph a camp wedding I like to watch Wes Anderson’s ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ the night before. His visual ascetics are so incredible and inspiring. I feel like it puts me in the right creative head space and always gives me ideas. I found it funny and charming that Tess and Paul described their wedding as Moonrise Kingdom meets the pacific northwest. For me that is kind of perfect! This was a great vendor team as well. It’s always really nice when you get to work with other wedding professionals that enjoy their job and work hard. It makes for a pretty magical day. Shooting outdoors is wonderful and beautiful and lovely but can be quite chaotic as well. You can’t control the weather, so you never know if you are going to have sun or rain or fog or wind. It worked out really well on this day, as it only rained in the in between moments when we weren’t shooting. Yay! It’s always very exciting when things work out like that. One of my favorite parts of the day was Tess and Paul’s first look down by the river. It was so sweet. Many couples are afraid of doing first looks because they don’t want them to be cheesy, but I find that usually they are a very special and intimate moment between the bride and the groom. It changes the energy between people when they are able to see each other and to take a breathe together before the ceremony. After all, these two people are about to “become one,” and I think it’s safe to say that they are invested enough on the day of the wedding to need each other.. and for that to be ok. Nerves are calmed and a different presence emits from most couples after the first look. It’s a wondrous thing to behold. Congratulations Tess and Paul! You are one rad couple and I am oh so happy for you!
