When preparing a home for the market, repainting every room is not always necessary or possible. Sometimes the better solution is to work thoughtfully with the existing color and choose furnishings that bring balance to the space.
This property was located in Yorba Linda, and the den had a very deep green wall color. The room did not have many windows, so there was limited natural light. Because the walls were not being repainted before the listing, we needed to make sure our staging helped the den feel bright, open, and spacious despite the limited natural light.
We began by selecting furniture in light, bright tones. White and soft neutral upholstery created an immediate contrast with the deep green walls and helped visually brighten the room. The lighter furniture also reflected the available natural light instead of absorbing it.
However, simply filling the den with white furniture could have made the design feel plain or disconnected from the rich wall color. To prevent that, we introduced several layers of texture.
We used upholstered pieces with soft, inviting fabrics and added woven materials throughout the room. These details gave the lighter palette more depth and made the space feel warm and collected. Rather than introducing many competing colors, we relied on variations in texture, shape, and material to create interest.
We also placed tall pampas branches inside a decorative pot. Although pampas is not traditional greenery, it provided the organic shape, height, and softness the room needed. Its warm, natural color connected beautifully with the woven elements and softened the contrast between the bright upholstery and dark green walls.
The styling was intentionally restrained. We did not want to add too many bold colors or small accessories, which could have made the den feel visually crowded. Instead, we selected decorative pieces that complemented one another and allowed the strong wall color to become part of the design.
Because this was a den rather than a formal living room, we also wanted it to feel a little more relaxed and playful. The furniture arrangement showed buyers that the room could be used as a comfortable place to read, watch television, spend time with family, or simply relax. It felt cozy without appearing heavy and casual without looking unfinished.
This Yorba Linda project demonstrates how professional home staging can change the way an existing paint color is perceived. The dark green could have become the feature that made buyers worry about the room’s size or lack of natural light. With the right furniture and accessories, it instead became a rich backdrop for a bright, inviting space.
The completed den felt larger, lighter, and comfortable while still maintaining its personality. We worked with the existing color rather than trying to ignore it, using light upholstery, woven textures, pampas branches, and carefully selected accessories to create balance.
The staging was extremely successful for the homeowners, the agent, and our team. The house sold during its first weekend on the market.
