Small rooms are often the spaces that benefit the most from professional home staging. When they are empty, buyers may see them as awkward, unusable, or simply too small. With thoughtful planning and properly selected furniture, however, even a very compact room can become a valuable feature of the home.
This Los Angeles property included an ADU with a bedroom measuring approximately nine by nine feet. It was a very small room, and we had to be careful about how we presented it. We could have staged it as a little office or even a man cave, but the main property already had a designated office.
Instead, we decided the ADU bedroom would offer more value as a comfortable guest room. This would help buyers imagine a parent, family member, or overnight guest having a welcoming place to stay while still enjoying privacy from the main house.
The first challenge was choosing the right bed. We wanted the room to feel like a real bedroom, so we used a full-size bed. The beautiful rattan headboard had an interesting floral shape and fine detailing, but its slim, open construction prevented it from feeling visually heavy. It created a focal point without taking up unnecessary space.
We paired the bed with two compact nightstands. They were small enough to fit comfortably beside the bed but still looked substantial enough to be functional. Properly proportioned lamps added soft, warm light, while small plants brought a little color and life into the room.
Because the bedroom was already so compact, we did not want to overwhelm it with too many colors, patterns, or competing textures. We kept the bedding primarily light and bright, then introduced a controlled amount of gray pattern through the decorative pillows and throw. The result felt layered and inviting without making the bed appear too busy for the room.
A mirrored wall behind the bed made a significant difference. It reflected light and visually expanded the bedroom, helping the space feel brighter and more open. We also added complementary botanical artwork above the nightstands. The matching placement created symmetry around the headboard and made the entire bed wall feel complete.
Rather than using a traditional rectangular area rug that would cover most of the limited floor space, we placed a small cowhide rug partially beneath the bed. Its organic shape added warmth and character while creating another layer without visually boxing in the room.
When buyers walked into the finished bedroom, the reaction we wanted was simple: “I could comfortably spend the night here.” Without furniture, it may have appeared to be a tiny, forgotten room with very little purpose. Once staged, it became a cozy and useful guest suite.
The home sold in less than two weeks. While many factors contribute to a successful sale, this room is a wonderful example of how strategic home staging can change the way buyers understand a space. We did not try to disguise its size. We simply showed how beautifully and comfortably it could function.
