Local expert discusses recruiting for bars

Finding the right people to help you reach your business goals is essential to success in any field. The job market has been a big issue for many business owners, especially in recent years, and it’s hard to find reliable employees who want to stay at the same job for a long period of time.

The food service and bar/brewery industry has been one of the most impacted by recent labor shortages. As wages increased after the pandemic, the service industry had a hard time keeping up, and the shortages continue today.

As a business coach, one of my services involves finding the right talent for my clients. I have had the opportunity to work with companies of all sizes and industries in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas, including Butler. My job as the business coach is to learn about the owner’s goals and then help them succeed by using my years of experience in the corporate world.

When it comes to bars and breweries, there are some unique challenges in running these types of businesses. While it’s important to provide a great experience and products, while staying current on all regulations and following drinking laws, many bar and brewery owners are struggling to keep their establishments fully staffed.

In this article, we’ll go over a few tips here for recruiting the right people to your bar or brewery. While these general tips can help, I am available for detailed coaching for your business if you need an in-depth plan to succeed.

Market the Job

Business owners have always been familiar with marketing their products and services, but an increasing trend has emerged in job marketing. With the market so tight, you need to make sure your job opportunity is in front of the right people. This can start by establishing who your ideal employee is, and learning about the places they frequent, the media they consume and their habits, and then taking steps to get your job posting in the right places. This can be as simple as putting up a flier in the right places for some businesses, or creating targeted online ads for others.

Interview Effectively and Professionally

Prospective employees have the luxury these days to interview the companies they might be working for just as much as they are being interviewed for the job. When you do get an applicant in for an interview, be sure you are prepared and professional, ready to answer any questions they might have and be sure to represent your establishment in a positive way. Establishing their role, discussing advancement and sharing your goals can all help you set yourself apart as an interviewer.

Search Your Current Team

If you have good employees, it’s likely they know other people who might be a good fit. You can incentivise them by offering a referral bonus if they bring someone in who works for a few months. In addition, if you have advancement opportunities, try to hire high performing employees when possible.
