The Condition Based Service reset has to be performed with a BMW-capable scan tool to clear the warning from the iDrive system and reset the wear interval. Skipping either step leaves the car with a dashboard warning that won’t go away or a sensor that won’t activate the next time the pads wear down.
Rotors Are Wear Items, and Resurfacing Usually Backfires
BMW specs 3 Series rotors thinner than most American sedan rotors and lists them as replacement parts rather than resurfaceable ones. Most 3 Series rotors are already close to minimum thickness from the factory, which leaves no useful material to remove on a brake lathe. Cutting them anyway pushes the rotor below minimum spec, which causes warping under hard braking and uneven pad transfer over time. We replace rotors with pads on most 3 Series jobs, because that’s how the system was engineered to be serviced.
The F30 and G20 Rear Caliper Will Punish a Shortcut
The rear caliper on F30 and G20 3 Series cars has an electric motor for the parking brake function, and the caliper has to be placed in service mode through a scan tool before the rear pads come off. A shop without the right software will try to compress the piston manually using a C-clamp or a piston tool, which damages the EPB motor or the internal piston threads.
