SYNOPSIS: We frequently see BMW models come in with recurring suspension problems like worn control arm bushings, failing air suspension, and bad shocks/struts. We discuss all of these problems in this article.

What Are the Most Common BMW Suspension Problems?

BMWs are celebrated for their unmatched driving dynamics and performance capabilities. However, like any vehicle, they are susceptible to wear and tear, especially in the suspension components. At our auto shop, we frequently see BMW models coming in with certain recurrent suspension problems.

As BMW specialists, we have extensive experience diagnosing and repairing suspension issues across the full model lineup. In this article, we’ll overview some of the most common BMW suspension problems that we encounter and provide model-specific examples of affected years.

Worn Control Arm Bushings – A Prevalent Problem
One prevalent issue on BMWs, particularly the 3 and 5 Series, is worn control arm bushings. The control arm bushings provide a flexible mounting point for the control arms and help dampen road impacts. But with high mileage, the rubber breaks down, leading to excessive vibration and wander.

On E90/E91/E92/E93 3 Series models built between 2006-2013, worn control arm bushings is a frequent diagnosis. We typically see the problem emerging around 80,000-100,000 miles. The vagueness in steering and deterioration in handling alerts drivers that it’s time to have their BMW’s control arm bushings replaced.

Air Suspension Woes
BMW’s air suspension, offered on various 5, 6, 7 and X5 models, provides a cushy ride. But as with any complex system, problems can arise. Failed air struts, malfunctioning valves, and leaky lines are some of the typical issues.

On the F10 5 Series (2010-2016), the rear air suspension is especially prone to problems. We routinely have customers come in with a sagging rear end and uncomfortable ride, pointing to air suspension issues. The system may lose height overnight or randomly drop when driving. Runs to our shop for diagnosis and repairs are commonly needed.

Shocks and Struts – The Importance of Replacement
Proper functioning shocks and struts are critical for ride comfort, handling, and safety. When these components leak fluid or lose their damping ability, the results are immediately noticeable.

Some affected BMW models we see are E90/E92/E93 3 Series (2006-2013) and E85/E86 Z4 (2002-2008). Symptoms like bouncing, uneven tire wear, and wandering require shock and strut replacement. We recommend inspecting for leaks or blown seals starting around 60,000 miles.

Ball Joints and Bushings – Causes of Clunking Noises
Ball joints and bushings facilitate key suspension movements while minimizing noise. But high forces and everyday driving eventually degrade the components. The result is clunking noises when going over bumps or turning.

F25 X3 models built from 2011-2017 often come into our shop with worn ball joints and bushings. A clunking noise from the front end when hitting potholes or making turns indicates wear. These components gradually lose their capacity to absorb impacts smoothly. Preventative maintenance helps, but replacements are inevitable.

Take Preventative Measures
While suspension issues inevitably occur with age and mileage, proper maintenance and driving style can extend component life. We recommend inspecting key areas like bushings, ball joints and air suspension during routine service. Catching problems early provides more options for preventative repairs.

Don’t Ignore Warning Signs
Suspension problems promote uneven tire wear, compromise handling, and impact safety. Vibrations, clunking noises, and loss of ride height are telltale signs of wear. Heeding these warnings and having your BMW promptly inspected helps avoid bigger issues down the road.
