These are Some Common AC Problems on Vehicles

If the air conditioning in your vehicle is not functioning properly, it can be incredibly uncomfortable. The air conditioner, although it is not 100% needed for the operation of your vehicle, it is still important to keep your vehicle’s AC functioning for comfort.  So, when your AC stops working, you may feel extra motivated to get the problem diagnosed and the repairs made right away. Here are some of the most common AC problems you may experience with your vehicle.

Bad capacitor

Capacitors help the electric motors in the AC unit operate. The capacitor gives a jolt of energy to the electric motors in the AC unit to get them to the optimal speed to produce cold air and send it through the vents inside your vehicle. If you notice that air is flowing through your AC vents but it is not cold, then you may need to have your capacitor replaced.

Refrigerant is low

If the air conditioner in your vehicle seems to be slowly losing its effectiveness, it may be because you have a slow leak of Freon or Puron coming from the AC unit hose connection. Oftentimes, you may only need to simply take your vehicle in to have more Freon or Puron added to the AC unit. If the problem is significant enough, then you may need to replace the AC unit hose or the entire unit.

Blower motor failure

If your blower motor fails, then simply the air conditioning unit in your vehicle is still able to produce cool air, it just is unable to move the air through the vents. Blower motor failures are quite common and not too difficult to fix. Most commonly, the blower motor simply needs to be replaced.

Blocked or broken condenser

The condenser in your vehicle’s AC unit is responsible for re-cooling hot refrigerant once it has been compressed. The condenser uses the air that flows into the front of your vehicle as you drive to cool the refrigerant. If for any reason there is debris in the condenser, then the refrigerant may not cool properly causing only hot air to flow through the vents. If you have the condenser inspected and no debris can be found, then it may be simply that the condenser is broken and needs to be replaced.

Electrical issues

One of the most basic yet hardest to identify problems that can occur with a vehicle’s AC unit is electrical issues stemming from broken or frayed wires. Broken or frayed wires are hard to spot, however, during an inspection, a properly trained mechanic should be able to notice them right away.
