- Overheating Engine
A common problem you’ll find with the A8 is overheating of the engine, often due to a failing thermostat. An engine that overheats can cause a variety of problems, including weird smells due to the burning of oil or rubber, ticking noises or thumping sounds coming from the engine, steam rising from the hood, or coolant leaking on the ground, or any combination of these problems. Alongside failing thermostats, leaks in the coolant system or a faulty radiator fan can also cause this problem. It is important to deal with engine heating problems as soon as possible, as overheating can cause damage to the engine itself, which will become a far bigger problem.
- Oil Leak
A problem seen often is an oil leak due to a failure in the seal on the propeller shaft at the rear end of your transmission system. Besides noticing the leaking oil on the ground, this will also cause your car to overheat, which will cause many of the same symptoms as noted above.
- Torque Converter Failure
The torque converter is one of the main mechanisms that help your Audi automatically shift gears. When the torque converter begins to fail, you may notice a decreased ability to accelerate, gear slippage, or even a complete inability to shift into particular gears. The transmission system might also overheat, or begin leaking fluid. Just like with an overheating engine, this will cause damage to the transmission system itself, which means it’s important to get it serviced as soon as you start noticing problems.
- Carbon Residue and Build-up in Engine
Third-generation Audi A8 and later models have a tendency to build up carbon residue within the intake valves and the intake tract of the engine system. This is due to the design of the engines, which sprays fuel directly into the engine, which allows the carbon to build up. The result of the build-up causes the engine to perform worse, decreasing the power of the engine and decreasing the fuel economy of the vehicle.
