As you press down on the brake pedal, your car shudders underneath you. At first, you wonder what happened, and when the incident occurs again, you know there is a problem. But what could it be? Brake rotors or something else? The technicians at Fremont Foreign Auto can get your car diagnosed and repaired so that you are back on the road in no time.

What is a Rotor Exactly?

If you have ever looked at the wheels of your car, you might notice that behind each wheel there is a big steel disc. The smooth surface of the disc is what your brake pads rub against, and the friction between them creates the force needed to slow or stop your vehicle. Without a rotor, the pads would have nothing to work against, and there would be no resistance to keep your vehicle from moving forward.

Why Do Rotors Need Replacing?

The primary reason rotors need repair is the friction caused by the contact of the brake pads. Over time, if the brake pads wear too thin, the bolts holding the pads can create grooves (scratches) in the rotor. If you hear a scraping sound from your car, then you are likely hearing the metal bolts scraping the metal of the disc (rotor). If you wait too long, the damage becomes permanent and the rotors will have to be replaced.

Another reason for rotor replacement is that over time, the surface of the rotor can warp or bend. Because the pads need flat surfaces to make contact with, if the rotors bend under the heat of constant braking, they can no longer provide adequate surface area to engage the pads. The symptom of this issue is that the car shudders when the brake pedal is applied.

A rotor must be a certain thickness to pass minimum safety standards. This means that due to the age or wear of the rotor, it may not be possible to simply “resurface” or smooth out the scratches. The technicians at Fremont can show you the specs on the rotors, and help you decide whether resurfacing or replacing is best.

Do I Have to Replace Pads When I Replace Rotors?

As the brakes are used, the pads develop imperfections or glazing over the surface area, which can mean less contact with the rotor. The residue on the pad increases the heat of the braking system, meaning a greater potential to warp or bend the surface area of the rotors. If a rotor is bent, the pad does not have enough surface area to “bite” into the disc. This is why you never want to put old pads on with new rotors, or vice-versa.

The staff at Fremont Foreign Auto employs technicians who have been certified by the manufacturer. Their training means that you can have the confidence that your Audi will be fixed right the first time, whether you are having a rotor issue or something else entirely.
