Start With What You Need
Everyone books a massage for a reason. Some people are trying to get rid of headaches or shoulder tension. Others are dealing with old injuries that still act up. And sometimes, you just need an hour to breathe. Knowing what you want helps narrow down who to see. A therapist who’s great with deep tissue might not be the best for gentle recovery work, and that’s okay.
Training Matters, But So Does Connection
In California, all massage therapists must be licensed through the California Massage Therapy Council. That’s the minimum. I’m a Board Certified Massage Therapist (BCMT), which means I’ve gone beyond the basics with additional training and continuing education. But credentials only go so far. What matters most is how someone listens, how they explain what they’re doing, and whether they make you feel safe at the table.
Talk First, Work Second
A good therapist won’t start until they understand what’s going on with your body. They’ll ask about pain, stress, sleep, and anything else that might affect how you feel. That conversation sets the tone. During the session, you should be able to speak up about pressure, areas to skip, or anything that feels off. Massage works best when it’s done with you, not to you.
Notice How the Space Feels
The studio matters. It should feel calm and private, not rushed or loud. The light should be soft. The temperature should feel right. You should walk in and immediately feel your shoulders drop. That’s usually the first sign you’re in the right place.
The Right Fit Isn’t Complicated
You’ll know when a therapist is a match. They’ll remember what you told them, check in without talking too much, and never make you feel like you have to “tough it out.” Some people like quiet, some talk a bit through the session. Either way is fine. The best therapists adjust to you, not the other way around.
How You Feel After Tells the Story
You might be a little sore the next day, but your body should also feel lighter, less heavy. Maybe you sleep better, or that knot you’ve had for months finally loosens. Those are good signs. And if something feels off, say so next time. The right therapist will listen and adjust without hesitation.
Schedule a Session in Castro Valley
If you’re in the East Bay and looking for a therapist who takes time to listen and work with your body, I’d be glad to help. Every person brings something different to the table, and every session should reflect that. You can learn more or schedule an appointment at www.gerileon.com.
