The new extended height vans like the Mercedes Sprinter Van are versatile utility vehicles that have really come a long way. In addition to being workhorse vehicles with extraordinary cargo space – they have huge amounts of prime vehicle advertising space on their exterior.
Taking Advantage of the Advertising Space
We recently got a chance to do some graphics on one for an Anaheim, CA aftermarket wheel importer. They had a beautiful black Sprinter van without even a product brand name on it and they were selling exotic Italian wheels to the aftermarket buyers. Those same buyers were driving by or behind this plain black van each day – missing 50,000+ potential consumer impressions every day. All the while mobile advertising could have been creating awareness or driving sales. Our plan was to tastefully advertise these high end wheels with images and branding that did not look like advertising.
Materials We Chose
We chose 3M vinyl and a 3M luster laminate to give a finish that would not glare, and would complement the subliminal background in the design – yet pop with color. Additionally the 3M products wear better and last longer than their cheaper competitors and we wanted a design that would look good for years. The graphics were then printed on our HP large format digital printer in high resolution. The resulting vibrant colors with amazing clarity really made the Sprinter graphics look great!
Vehicle Design Influences Graphics Design
The recessed side panels allowed for the decal size and design to look integral to the paint job and it fit well with the subliminal carbon fiber background that shows off wheel designs. Adding some highly contrasting colors allowed those areas to visually separate from the black base color and the background.
The graphics install was done by our in-house “vinyl wrap artist” and the van was finished off with some rear die-cut decals and roof line logo stripes.
The resulting look is that of a subtle, tasteful vehicle wrap – but without the cost of a full wrap. For less than a third of the cost of a vehicle wrap – we were able to use strategically designed and placed decals for a wrap look!
