The Sign Authority in Wheaton, IL recently completed a custom exterior building sign for Swagelok in Carol Stream, IL. The client sent us a photo of another sign from another one of their corporate locations and asked us to recreate the sign. This sign is highly custom and unique in that is has push through acrylic on the logo that illuminates from the front and the sides. The rest of the sign was fabricated in aluminum and custom painted with a metallic paint. The edge of the sign has a custom lip that houses a led lighting system that allows it to “glow” from the edges. This is called an edge lit sign. The photo you see above may not look like a complex sign, but if you could see this at night (I wish we had a night shot) you would change your mind.
We use quality materials and led lighting for all of our custom light signs. Why use led lighting versus neon?
- Power usage: LED displays use between 5 and 10 times less power than a comparable neon sign, leading to significant long term cost savings.
- Maintenance: Neon tubes have to have their gasses periodically refilled, something that is best left to a (costly) professional. LED signs require virtually no maintenance and can last up to around a decade before needing to be replaced.
- Environmentalism: Neon signs are easily broken, being made of glass, and contain noxious gasses, which leak out. LED does not have this problem. Adaptive LED displays are also made in the USA, in Wisconsin.
- Brightness: LED displays are far brighter than neon. They can be seen from further away, even in broad daylight.
