Dupage Convalescent Center in Wheaton, IL was looking for some new ADA compliant signs for a newly renovated wing at their center. They contacted us at the Sign Authority looking for a particular style they saw in a catalog. We obtained a sample for them and after a brief consultation with our sales associate they determined that particular type of ADA sign would not work on that floor due to the nature of the patients. The sales associate brought back several other samples, and one was chosen. We then had a prototype made for them to have a “live” sample.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a piece of legislation that imposes requirements on certain aspects of some signs and buildings to be more accessible to persons with disabilities. Making sure you have ADA compliant signs is very important. Some signs require Braille for the visually impaired. This can be done through the placing of small beads on the front of the sign, which can be plastic or metal as needed by the sign in question. Other times you may be required to have a tactile sign (left)–which is a sign that has raised or engraved images (and perhaps text). These are often seen on bathrooms, for example, with the picture of the male or female being easily felt if the fingers are run along the sign. You may also need certain signs depending on the services you offer–if you have any telecommunications devices for the deaf (TDD), you’ll need signs to indicate that.
