Dry Needling for Stubborn Chronic Muscle Pain

BY: Jacob Kelso, Modern Medicine of Sun Lakes, AZ
Chronic pain has a way of making normal life feel smaller. A tight shoulder changes how you sleep. A stiff lower back changes how you walk. A nagging hip or neck ache may make hobbies, exercise, errands, or work feel harder than they should. At Modern Medicine of Sun Lakes, AZ, we see many patients dealing with pain linked to muscle tension, old injuries, overuse, or movement patterns built up over time. Dry needling may help when stubborn trigger points keep muscles tight and irritated, even after rest, stretching, or massage. Dry needling uses a thin, sterile, single-use needle placed into a tight muscle knot, also called a trigger point. No medication goes into the body. The goal is to create a small muscle response, often felt as a twitch, which may help the muscle relax, calm irritated tissue, improve blood flow, and reduce pain. Chronic pain often involves more than one issue. A painful knee may change the way you walk, which adds stress to the hip or low back. Neck stiffness may lead to headaches. Shoulder tightness may limit your ability to reach, lift, or sleep. For this reason, we do not look at dry needling as a stand-alone fix. We use it as one tool inside a broader physical therapy and non-surgical orthopedic plan. Before treatment begins, we evaluate movement, strength, pain patterns, medical history, and goals. At our Sun Lakes clinic, our approach may also include imaging and hands-on assessment to understand better what is driving the problem. This matters because two people may feel pain in the same area for completely different reasons. During a dry needling session, most patients feel a brief pinch, pressure, or muscle twitch. Some feel sore afterward, similar to post-workout soreness, but this usually fades. Many patients notice easier movement after treatment, while others need several visits before results build. Honest answer? Chronic pain rarely disappears because of one appointment. Progress usually comes from the right plan, steady follow-through, and smart adjustments along the way. Dry needling may be useful for neck pain, low back discomfort, tight shoulders, headaches connected to muscle tension, plantar fasciitis, tendon irritation, hip pain, and sports-related muscle problems. It works best when paired with movement retraining, stretching, strengthening, posture work, and activity changes. Loosening a trigger point is helpful, but teaching the body how to move better helps relieve pain last. Safety also matters. We use sterile, disposable needles and licensed providers trained in proper technique. Dry needling is not ideal for every patient, especially those with certain medical concerns, bleeding risks, skin infections, or high needle anxiety. We review these details before recommending treatment. If chronic pain keeps returning, the question is not only, “Where does it hurt?” The better question is, “Why does it keep coming back?” At Modern Medicine of Sun Lakes, AZ, we build care plans around the person, not just the sore spot. If pain has started controlling your schedule, sleep, workouts, or daily routine, dry needling may be worth discussing. Contact our Sun Lakes office to schedule an evaluation and learn whether this treatment fits your recovery plan.
