In this quick post, we are continuing our series of franchising definitions articles with the operations manual.
The operations manual is a document that outlines everything the franchisee needs to do in order to properly operate the business and be successful.
It’s the list of specific tasks that needs to be done by the franchisee, in which particular order, with all the details, down to the most granular level, needed to make sure the task is executed properly.
The whole point of the operations manual is to make sure that the business is operated as the franchise has designed and intends. It’s what helps ensure that the franchisee will be successful – by following the blueprint the franchise has created for the franchisee. The operations manual covers all of the day-to-day things that need to be done to make sure the franchise is run properly.
This is not a document that is designed to make franchisees follow rules and do things how the franchise wants just because. It is a document that is designed to make sure the franchisee has a high chance of success. It is in the best interest of the franchise for the franchisee to be successful, so they want to provide an instruction manual that incorporates all of the things they have learned in order to dial in the business.
It’s all of the headaches and the hardships and the tinkering and the failures that led to the success of the franchise that need to be translated to each owner. A great operations manual is a very valuable asset to the franchisee, and is part of what can motivate a person to buy into a great franchise.
