Open Face Channel Letters
Open face channel letter signs are created using clear acrylics. While they can be illuminated through both neon and LED lights, neon is more commonly used. They either don’t have a sign face at all or have a clear sign face. This allows the people to view the lights within the letters.
Front-Lit Channel Letters
These are the most popular types of custom channel letter signs. The sides and back of this variant are made from aluminum, while the sign face is made from either acrylic or polycarbonate plastic. They’re internally lit with either neon or LED lights, and are highly customizable.
Cut-out translucent vinyl is typically used to establish the color elements of the sign. In other cases, the acrylic itself can be the color of the face, as long as your signage color matches with the standard colors available. The opaque sides of the channel letters can be painted in any color.
Backlit Channel Letters
Also known as reverse-lit or halo-lit channel letters, these signs contain LEDs at the back of the letters, emitting lights through them. To create a halo effect around the sign, the back side of the letters is created from clear acrylic with standoffs. The face of the letters in backlit channel letters does not illuminate at all. The lights that light them from the back give out a classy look, creating a unique visual image for the business.
Compound Channel Letters
They are considered as a combination of front-lit and reverse-lit channel letters. They feature translucent faces and clear backs. In some cases, a second aluminum backer is added in between the polycarbonate backer and the sign face. This additional backer comprises LED colors both on the front and at the back. Hence, the colors used to light up the face of the letters and create the halo effect can differ.
