What Is Hyperbaric Therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, often shortened to just hyperbaric therapy, is where you go into a chamber that’s able to increase the oxygen and pressure on the inside of it.
The purpose of the higher oxygen level is to guarantee there’s enough for your lungs to absorb, and the greater pressure actually helps your body get more oxygen in it. This makes it much more effective at heightening your oxygen levels.
What Does Hyperbaric Therapy Feel Like?
For the most part, you’ll probably not notice anything at all. However, it is common to feel pressure in your ears during this therapy similar to when you’re in an airplane as it takes off. Swallowing or intentionally yawning relieves this for most people.
If you’re particularly sensitive to pressure, you may also have some slight dizziness. However, as you should be lying down anyway, this should be perfectly manageable.
How Is This Therapy Helpful?
It’s simple: your cells all need oxygen, but this is quickly used up by your body, especially when you work out. Oxygen is used to heal damage, deliver nutrients, and much more; basically, everything your cells do requires oxygen, either directly or indirectly.
Therefore, by giving you extra oxygen, your cells are able to do whatever they need to. This means the cells that detox your muscles, repair muscle tissue, grow new muscles tissue, and everything else all do their jobs with more ease.
Are There Any Dangers To Hyperbaric Therapy?
While hyperbaric therapy is safe for almost everyone, there are still exceptions and situations where caution is needed.
For example, if you were to have a session while also having an ear infection or a similar problem, you could hurt your ear and cause yourself unnecessary pain. Another case when having this therapy isn’t advisable is while you’re recovering from a collapsed lung.
The main concern is oxygen toxicity, which is when too much oxygen gets in your system. This is why our recovery specialists are always on hand and monitoring you to ensure your safety.
