Safety is the number one priority when it comes to newborn photography. Finding a photographer with experience handling newborns and being up-to-date on critical vaccinations is crucial.
A good photographer will also know how to handle and position your baby during the session correctly. Some poses may be dangerous when attempted by someone without the right experience, so it’s crucial to ensure the photographer you hire has the right expertise. As a lifestyle photographer, I prefer to have the newborn safely in mom or dad’s arms.
As a former pediatric nurse practitioner, I have over 20 years of experience working with newborns and children. I cared for one-pound preemies in the NICU, and I know how to hold, swaddle, and comfort your little one.
Flexibility is Key
When dealing with a newborn, it’s essential to be flexible. Most of my newborn sessions take 1-3 hours, but the baby is in charge here. My goal is to give you images that reflect your connection and bond with your newest family member. I’m not there to provide you with stiff, posed portraits. This means when the baby wants to be fed, changed, or just comforted, that’s what we do. And I’ll keep taking photos the entire time. Some of the best newborn photos are of those little, intimate moments!
Because families with older siblings often come in for a newborn session, I always make sure to include them. Kids have their own schedules, so I understand when they want to take a break from the photo shoot and go play. That’s totally fine! But usually, once they see how sweet the baby is, they can’t help but want to join in. So I just let them come to me at their own pace and get involved when they’re ready. It always makes for the most beautiful images!
How to Prepare for Your Session
Newborn sessions usually occur during the first ten weeks after birth, so it’s essential to book your session in advance. I will then provide you with a detailed list of what to bring and how to prepare for the shoot. Feeding and changing your baby right before your session is essential, so they are comfortable and happy.
I also recommend keeping your home warm on the day of the session since babies are more relaxed when they’re warm and cozy. Also, if you plan on a home session, I suggest tidying up the room where we’ll take photos. Everything will be ready and ready to go when I arrive!
