Who is Being Photographed? When considering the best time of day and year for professional outdoor family photos, you must also consider who is being photographed. If your family includes little ones who still need a nap in the afternoon or go to bed by 6:00 pm, then an early evening session may not be the best idea. Instead, opt for a morning or mid-day session. A sunrise golden hour session may be a perfect choice if your children are older and you are all early birds. However, if you are not early birds, we may have better luck at the sunset golden hour. Time of Day The best time of day for outdoor family photos will depend on the season, but generally speaking, the golden hour (one hour after sunrise or one hour before sunset) is ideal. During the golden hour, we will get softer and warmer tones that are so flattering in outdoor photos. The sun won't be too harsh or too low, making it easier to work with natural light. During the summer months, mid-day sessions are an excellent option for families with little ones as there is more time in the day to work with. In the winter months, when most of us are inside more often due to shorter days and cooler temperatures, midday shooting is tricky as the sun is much lower in the sky, and the light is harsher. Spring (April to June) - Spring in the Bay Area is ideal for outdoor family photos. From April to June, you should expect beautiful blooming gardens and flowers and pleasant temperatures to ensure comfortable photo sessions. The days are starting to become longer, and you are able to take advantage of the springtime golden hour light illuminating skin tones beautifully. Fall months (September through November) - The fall months in the Bay Area will provide some of the most stunning outdoor family photos. The temperatures are still mild, and although the days are getting shorter and darker more quickly, the light is still soft and golden in the afternoon.
