When it comes to having professional outdoor family photos taken, timing is everything! You want to choose a time of day and year that will show off your family in the best light (literally and figuratively).

Who is Being Photographed?
When considering the best time of day and year for professional outdoor family photos, you must also consider who is being photographed.
If your family includes little ones who still need a nap in the afternoon or go to bed by 6:00 pm, then an early evening session may not be the best idea. Instead, opt for a morning or mid-day session.
A sunrise golden hour session may be a perfect choice if your children are older and you are all early birds. However, if you are not early birds, we may have better luck at the sunset golden hour.
Time of Day
The best time of day for outdoor family photos will depend on the season, but generally speaking, the golden hour (one hour after sunrise or one hour before sunset) is ideal. During the golden hour, we will get softer and warmer tones that are so flattering in outdoor photos. The sun won’t be too harsh or too low, making it easier to work with natural light.
Mid-day photoshoots are also possible, depending on the season. During the summer months, mid-day sessions are an excellent option for families with little ones as there is more time in the day to work with. In the winter months, when most of us are inside more often due to shorter days and cooler temperatures, midday shooting is tricky as the sun is much lower in the sky, and the light is harsher.
Best Time of Year for Family Photos in the Bay Area
The weather in the Bay Area is temperate year-round, but certain times offer better conditions for outdoor photos.
Summer months (May to August) – The Bay Area’s summer months offer incredible outdoor family photo opportunities. The days are typically longer, and there is usually no need to worry about rain, fog, or wind. Because the sun stays out longer, it is the perfect time to capture beautiful golden hour photos.
Spring (April to June) – Spring in the Bay Area is ideal for outdoor family photos. From April to June, you should expect beautiful blooming gardens and flowers and pleasant temperatures to ensure comfortable photo sessions. The days are starting to become longer, and you are able to take advantage of the springtime golden hour light illuminating skin tones beautifully.
Fall months (September through November) – The fall months in the Bay Area will provide some of the most stunning outdoor family photos. The temperatures are still mild, and although the days are getting shorter and darker more quickly, the light is still soft and golden in the afternoon. This is the perfect time for outdoor family photos, as you can take advantage of all the stunning fall colors.
Winter months (December to March) – The winter months are unpredictable when it comes to weather in the Bay Area, but there are still some days that make for beautiful outdoor family photos. On clear and sunny days, you should expect a softer light than during other times of the year. These winter shots will give beautiful contrast and texture to your outdoor photos.
Don’t Forget the Weather!
No matter the season, always remember to check the forecast before planning your outdoor family photoshoot. Reschedule on days with overcast skies, rain, or strong winds so you are able to get the most stunning photos possible. Fire season also brings smokey air, making an outdoor session intolerable for some. In this case, just reschedule. After all, outdoor family photos should be natural and full of life!
