When most people think of photography, they envision images of landscapes or majestic beaches taken outdoors. However, photographs taken indoors can be just as beautiful and evocative.

Often, indoor photography can be more challenging than outdoor photography, as it requires careful light control and a keen eye for composition. However, with practice, anyone can learn to take stunning indoor photographs.

The key is to pay attention to the available light and use creative techniques to enhance the scene’s mood. By doing so, it is possible to capture the beauty and mysteries of the indoor space in a single frame.

Leigh Ann Pincus Photography, based out of Oakland, CA, offers the following tips for taking beautiful indoor photographs.

5 Tips for Taking Indoor Photos

  1. Lighting – One of the most important aspects of taking indoor photos is lighting. If possible, try to use natural light from windows or doors to create stunning images. Positioning your subject facing the light can provide beautiful, even lighting on your subject. But don’t forget to play with shadows as well. Positioning your subject with the light behind can also make for interesting images.

Since natural lighting isn’t always available, you may be able to use overhead lights or other light sources to create compelling colors or shadows. Don’t be afraid to play around with the light you have.

  1. Composition – Another important aspect of taking indoor photos is composition. If the space is cluttered and distracting from the subject, try moving closer to the subject. A great way to emphasize a subject when using your iPhone is to take the photo in portrait mode. This will enable you to have the subject in focus with the background blurred.Family at home
  2. Mood – One of the great things about indoor photography is it creates a specific mood. By carefully controlling the indoor environment, it is possible to create mysterious, serene, or foreboding images. Think about the overall feeling you want to convey in the photo and adjust the scene accordingly.Family at home
  3. Angles – Another way to add interest to indoor photos is to experiment with different angles. Instead of taking a traditional straight-on photo, try shooting from above or below. This will give the picture a more dynamic feel and help you capture the scene in a new and exciting way.
  4. Discover Your Space – If you’re shooting in an indoor setting, take a good walk around the house and see if there are any areas you could shoot in you never thought about before. Sometimes, the most mundane places can make for the most interesting photos.
