This client came to Homewatch CareGivers of Oakland in January 2017. For the sake of privacy, we’ll call him George Garcia and his wife Rosario. When I met the Garcia family, I was struck by how warm and welcoming they were. Their family home in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland was well loved. George and Rosario had raised their children there and had frequent visits from Grandchildren and very large extended family. We were initially contacted by their Daughter Annabelle, who had moved in temporarily to help her mother with George's care. Although George and Rosario were retired, Annabelle had taken time-off of work in order to help out. She lived and worked in Sacramento with her disabled husband John. John could fend for himself for a few days but it was hard on him to be without Annabelle. So, we were brought in to make things easier for Annabelle, her mother Rosario, and ultimately for the client George. George Garcia was Diabetic and was in the final stages of Kidney Failure. He had lost the ability to walk unassisted a few weeks before we met him but he was determined to drive his car again. Although he would eventually transition to hospice care, George's enthusiasm was heartening. It was clear that he was the family patriarch. His family meant everything to him, especially his wife Rosario. For the 40+ years George and Rosario had been married, she had cooked his meals and tended after his various needs. We assisted her every day for 4 hours in the morning and 3 hours at night. Because of George's decreasing strength, our team of caregivers helped him with all his Activities of Daily Living (ADL). We got him dressed in the morning, assisted him with bathing and grooming, helped him eat, assisted him with walking, eventually transferred him in/out of a wheelchair, and when he became bed-bound we provided incontinence care. Early on in our agency's development, the Full ADL care that George required was a challenge for our growing family of caregivers. Homewatch CareGivers of Oakland. Let our family care for yours.
