The human body is an amazing thing. It grows and shrinks, breaks and mends, and it gets sick and heals itself. Focusing on what we can control in times of uncertainty is the best thing we can do for ourselves, our family, and our community. Prevention is an important piece of the puzzle of course; wash your hands, maintain social distance, and don’t go out if you’re sick. But your body’s immune system can be a missing piece if it’s not prepared. The lungs are resilient organs, but don’t take them for granted. Avoid smoking tobacco and marijuana and wear filtration masks when air quality is bad. Be sure to get lots of aerobic exercise as this leads to improved lung capacity. According to Health.com several studies have shown that vitamins A, C, E, as well as vitamin D, may help improve lung health. If you take care of your lungs when you’re healthy, they’ll take care of you. The bloodstream circulates oxygen throughout the body and it also fights off infection. Antibodies fight the battles that handwashing cannot; sometimes immunizations and other drugs are necessary to improve their efficacy. When cures are not readily available though, there are still things we can do to strengthen our immune response. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and drink alcohol in moderation. Maintaining a healthy weight and getting enough sleep is important too. Vitamin C is one of the biggest immune system boosters but Vitamin B6 is also shown to support the body’s biochemical reactions. Inside your gut there are both chemical and biological reactions going on constantly. It is important to support those good reactions because your gut health can play a key role in combatting diseases. Try eating less sugar and increasing your fiber intake. Consider adding yogurt or probiotics to your diet. Also, certain fermented foods support a healthy gut and immune system. Silver linings can be found among the darkest clouds. During trying times, when you may be worried about your health, take positive action. Focus on what you can control and be proactive.
