Homewatch CareGivers of Oakland got its first client in December of 2016. For the sake of privacy, we’ll call him John Winter and his wife Jean. John had cancer and it had metastasized to his brain and vital organs. He had been placed on Hospice by his health insurance but his wife was not ready to let him go. When Jean contacted Homewatch CareGivers, we were newly licensed and eager to begin serving the community. We met with John and Jean at their home near Oakland Technical High School on a Wednesday night. Jean was not sleeping well and it was clear to her that she needed help. We began by discussing her situation and the alternative therapies she was trying. John was experiencing delirium and was losing fine motor control. He was also getting up multiple times throughout the night to use the bathroom. From Jean’s perspective, she needed some nighttime help to make sure that she got some sleep. With all this information in hand, we developed a care plan that incorporated the therapies Jean was using, the hospice care he was receiving, and the functional support we would be providing. After coordinating with our team of caregivers, home care began that Friday. We provided overnight care from 9:00pm to 11:00am every day for almost 5 weeks. John’s condition deteriorated and eventually he became bed bound. The team of caregivers worked every night, through Christmas and New Years, until John passed away peacefully in his sleep. Our caregiver coordinated with the hospice organization and they took care of the rest. Jean was devastated but at the same time, she was relieved; John’s suffering had ended. The care teams at Homewatch CareGivers and the hospice company helped John pass with as little pain as possible and as much dignity as possible.
