How Static Cling Signs Are Made & Why They Stick

BY: Your Name, Your Business

Many businesses need temporary signs and graphics. They sometimes need signs which are removable and leave no surface damage. Static cling decals offer a solution, and they can be applied to glass, metal, plastics, and other surfaces.

Below we discuss the steps involved in making static cling sheets, how images are printed on them, how to install them, and how to care for them.

What are Static Clings?

Static cling decals are made from a thin, flexible vinyl material. They have no adhesive and rely on cohesive forces between smooth surfaces to stick in place. It works similarly to how plastic wrap clings to things. They are used on both the inside and outside of windows. They can be applied to other smooth surfaces such as glass doors and metal filing cabinets. Static cling decals are available in white and clear and can be printed in full color with a company logo, custom message, and colors.

Why Do Static Cling Decals Stay in Place?

The vinyl decal’s smoothness combined with air pressure and molecular bonding work together to create a connection to smooth surfaces. By applying the vinyl decal, you are, in essence, removing any air between the decal and the object; this forms a vacuum like how a suction cup works. Therefore, there is a slight resistance when removing static cling decals. Think of it as millions of microscopic suction cups holding the graphic in place.

How are Static Cling Decals Made?

Static cling decals are printed with a process called screen printing. A stencil is created on a mesh screen placed over the substrate or vinyl material. The ink is pushed through the openings in the stencil with a squeegee onto the vinyl. After the ink has dried, a clear laminate layer is added to protect the decal from UV rays and abrasion.

How are Static Cling Sheets Installed?

Static cling decals are easy to install and remove without damaging the surface or leaving any residue.

  1. First, simply clean the surface with a glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth.
  2. Then, spray the surface with a light coating of water.
  3. Next, peel the backing off the decal and apply it to the surface.
  4. Rub it gently with your fingers to ensure good contact.
  5. Use a squeegee to remove air bubbles and smooth out the decal.

How Should Static Clings be Stored and Cleaned?

Static cling decals should be stored in a cool, dry place. They should not be exposed to extreme heat or cold as this will damage the material. To clean, simply wipe the decal with a damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasives as this will also damage the decal.
