Santa Cruz, CA | The Shift in Thinking that is Necessary for Business Success

The Owner-Operated Business Mindset

I have worked with business owners for more than 2 decades, collaboratively documenting their systems and putting other elements of their business infrastructure in place as well as helping them solve their day-to-day business frustrations. My clients typically work with me for a number of years since there is much to be done to ensure the fulfillment of their business vision.

When my clients begin working with me, they often are focused on what is happening day-to-day, without giving much thought to their big picture strategy going forward. They are more or less in a “firefighting” mode, handling whatever frustrations arise in the moment. This type of approach often requires the owner of the business to be there to handle all the frustrations that arise and their impact on customers, vendors and investors.

This reactive way of operating puts the business off balance and is not a position of strength. There is a more proactive way to operate a business that results in seamless day-to-day operations in accordance with the company’s long term goals.

Reactive vs. Proactive Thinking

What many owners of small to medium sized businesses don’t consider is the shift in thinking that is required to create a seamless path to  their success. That shift is from being reactive to proactive in the way they approach their business. A proactive approach to building a business that works starts with the understanding that “working on your business” is different than working “in it” day-to-day. Working ‘on’ your business requires strategic or big picture thinking. Strategic thinking simply means that you have your end game in mind from the start, with a clear plan how to get there instead of just handling what comes your way day-to-day.

There are certain elements of business infrastructure that need to be built and put in place to ensure smooth-running business operations day-to-day. Putting these missing pieces in place ensures consistent results and a positive customer experience. Without them, you are depending on your employees to deliver results without the guidance needed to ensure a sustainable business model.

Working “On It” vs Working “In It”

Here are some of elements of the business infrastructure that you will need to ensure predictable outcomes and healthy work relationships:

  1. Business Vision
Clarifies the details of the business when it is fully in place and operating to its full potential
  2. Organization Chart
Shows the job functions needed to fulfill the business vision
  3. Systems
Document the key operating procedures to ensure shared expectations and accountability
  4. Position Agreements
Establish the result, work and standards of each job function in the company
  5. Marketing Foundation
Identifies your key target markets and establishes your messaging to attract your ideal customers.

Working “On It” means taking time to build these necessary elements of business infrastructure. One hour a day dedicated to working on your business will put a strong foundation in place that will reduce the overall number of business frustrations and ensure that all your employees are on the same page about how they can work most effectively together. As a business owner, it’s your job to provide the clarity about how things will be done day-to-day and who is accountable for what. That is why ‘strategic work’ matters and warrants attention. Strategic thinking isn’t pie in the sky. It’s the path to business success!
