With the holidays almost here, families reunite to spend their special days with loved ones. As the house fills up with family it can get a little hectic. It can be challenging to keep the little ones safe, happy, and calm around an abnormally large group of people, which they usually aren't used to . As a preschool and daycare we recognize the difficulty level for some of the kids to sit still for long periods of time. When the family has a long car rides from house to house to try and see everyone one the special holiday, it can be hard for the little ones to not get all grumpy and throw a fuss! Here are some tips to help you keep your child amused for these long and sometimes strenuous car rides.
Toys, toys and more toys!- The most common and easiest distraction for kids are toys. There is never any need to go out and buy expensive toys. Something as simple as a coloring book, action figure or doll can keep them entertained for hours!
How much longer?- Bring a paper map for your child so they can follow along with you location and surroundings. Maybe mark the start and endpoints so they know how far you're traveling and what your passing.
Read me!- Pick out a new book or bring an old book with you to have story time in the car! This is a fun and educational way to keep your child distracted from the time remaining upon arrival. If reading in the car doesn't seem to work out try an audio version or CD of the book.
Lets Play!- Simple car games have been around for years! I Spy, The license plate game, and 20 Questions are just some super easy games to enjoy on road trips.
I want it!- Bring some store magazines and have your child circle what they like or would like for Christmas. This can help them decide what to write on their letter to Santa.
