We get to enjoy quite a bit of sunshine in California, which makes it pretty easy for the kids at The Learning Tree preschool to play outside regularly.
In general, though, today’s kids spend more time indoors than ever before. Whether it’s the distraction of electronic devices, or busy schedules that keep parents and children from exploring the outside world, it’s easy for a family to find they’ve stayed inside all day.
There are many reasons, however, to make it a priority to get our kids outdoors. Here are few of the health benefits, both mental and physical.A strong immune system
Kids who spend time outdoors get the chance to build up immunities they might not otherwise have. The allergens that are in the air might seem like a bad thing, but normal outdoor exposure actually gives kids the chance to build up immunities that are useful later in life.
Exercise
Obvious, right? Anyone who has watched kids playing outside can see that the play that kids often engage in on the playground or in their backyard means they are getting their heart rate up and exercising their muscles.
Flexing the imagination
Turn kids loose in the backyard, at the park, or on the playground and watch what happens. They can make a game out of any situation or in any environment! Why is this important? Kids engaging in imaginative play are building their problem-solving skills and as well as their creative and critical thinking. So that backyard game is actually giving them skills they will use for a lifetime.
Fresh air and sunshine, of course!
Just 10-15 minutes in the sun gives us the daily requirement of vitamin D. And who doesn’t sleep better after spending some time in the fresh air? A good night’s sleep helps our children grow, so making sure they get outside is another thing you can do to help along your child’s healthy development.
