Warehouses today typically are equipped with either linear fluorescent lamps or metal halide lamps. While these types of lights are an improvement over incandescent bulbs, they still pose a fair share of problems such as shorter life span or less efficient lighting. Switching to LED lighting can make all the difference in improving light in any warehouse space.
Warm-Up Time
Metal halide lamps are known for the warm-up time required to reach full power. This is why stadiums will turn on light well before a game begins in order to provide ample warm-up time. This could lead to wasted energy and cost as lights must be turned on before they need even be used. LED lights don’t require warm-up time and are ready to go from the moment the switch is turned on. Many stadiums and warehouses are choosing LED installation for the overall cost-efficiently and savings, such as no warm-up time.
Switching On and Off
Just as metal halide lights require warm-up time, they also require a cooling-off period before they can be turned back on. Once lights are turned off, it could be 15-20 minutes before they can be switched back on again. This means that lights can’t be switched off when not in use and then on again because it could mean more time waiting to turn the lights back on again. This, again, leads to wasted energy when lights could be switched off for a period of time when not needed and then turned back on again.
LED lights can be turned on and off instantaneously with no wasted energy required for using lights when a space is not in use.
Dimming Lights
LED lights do require specific hardware for dimming. However, this hardware is very easy to obtain and install. LED lights are more efficient when they aren’t running at full power, so using a dimming switch can save lots of energy efficiency and money for warehouses. Dimming LED lights also increases an already long lifespan. Using LED “smart lights” is a smart decision for any warehouse.
