[caption id="attachment_1293" align="alignleft" width="300"] Neon Sign Repair[/caption] When we get a call for service work on a sign, we like to find out as much information as possible about the sign we will be working on.  We find out the type of sign that needs service; channel letters, pole / pylon, cabinet or monument.  Is the sign illuminate with, neon, LED or fluorescent lamps, the approximate age of the sign, as well as the accessibility of the sign.  And finally, what issues is the customer having ; is the sign not lighting at all, partially lighting or has other issues?  All of these things help us determine what equipment and parts we may need to properly service the sign. [caption id="attachment_1291" align="alignright" width="300"] Large Pylon Double-sided Cabinet Retrofit[/caption] When we arrive on site, we do a quick survey of the situation to see if anything immediately jumps out at us.  Is there missing or broken lamps or neon?  If the customer has a timer, is the timer set correctly?  Is electrical power reaching the sign?  Are there any loose or broken wires?  Is there a photocell and is it working properly?  If it isn't anything simple, we start more in-depth troubleshooting. [caption id="attachment_1292" align="alignleft" width="300"] Channel Letter LED Retrofit[/caption] We always take into consideration the age, overall condition and illumination method of the sign that we are working on.  If the sign is neon or fluorescent illuminated, needs multiple transformers / ballasts along with new neon / lamps and the sign is more than 7 years old, we like to give the customer the option to retrofit with LEDs.  Many times it will make more financial sense to retro the sign rather than repair, assuming the rest of the sign is in good shape. With a retrofit, you get the latest technology along with new (usually brighter illumination),  power supplies and of course the warranty to go along with it.   With a repair, while the new parts are warranted, you may still have half, if not more, of the sign that has parts that are still several years old and could fail in a few weeks or months.  This may result in another service call and more repair costs.
