The Town of Lyme recently completed renovations of their Town Hall and Library. A member of the Town Campus Center Building Committee contacted us to discuss having two plaques made to commemorate the time spent by the committee to accomplish the completion of the buildings and to all the project donors that supported the construction of these two beautiful buildings. My initial meeting with the committee member on site in Lyme, CT, I provided some samples and some information on materials, finishes, and styles available for plaque construction.
Our second meeting we started more detailed discussions on the information that would be going on the plaque, places the plaques would be installed, and general sizes. Back at the studio we drafted the initial layout for the plaque. After a few iterations we settled on a plaque size of 20” x 24” bronze plaque. Given the number of donors we determine this to be the minimum size for the font we were using. Now that we had the size and basic layout turned our attention to the 14 different finish combinations, including polished, painted, or oxidized. We also need to decide on the depth of the plaque. In this case the decision was to go with a single line border, brown Leatherette with brushed surface and a clear semi-gloss finish. The finishing touch would be 1” diameter rosettes to cover the mounting screws.
One note when dealing with cast or machined plaques and that is to be meticulous when reviewing the content that will go on the plaque. It is worth the time to ensure you have everything spelled correctly. The only way to correct an error is to remake the entire plaque which is both costly and time consuming.
Working with the client we were able to provide them with two bronze plaques that honored both the people overseeing the construction project, as well as the donors. The choice of cast bronze provided not only a classic look but one that will stand the test of time.
