Recently, we were contacted by KAPCO Global. Their Global headquarters is in Brea, CA but the local branch located in Essex, CT is apparently not so easy to find. KAPCO had a late night phone call from the fire department looking for the location of their CT building. This was a problem. They needed something visible from two directions and large enough to easily be seen by those approaching the building, especially emergency vehicles. We got to work designing and fabricating a custom sign that will help solve their problem.
The project started when we met with the client to capture all the requirements. This gave us a chance to discuss location, dimensions of the sign and desired height above the ground. It was at this point that we got the story on why they needed the sign. The general manager of the CT facility received a late night call from the area fire department responding to an emergency but was not able to locate the facility. Given the situation and the fact that this would be an unlit sign, we recommended the use of engineering grade reflective vinyl to increase visibility of the sign at night. With the requirements and budget in hand, we designed a post and panel sign. We constructed with 4×4 pressure treated posts and a 48”L x 36” H primed MDO sign panel then secured to the posts with aluminum angle brackets. The posts and panel were painted with One Shot Polar White enamel paint to give it a durable finish. And the white background gives a very good contrast to the blue and green colors used to letter the sign.
One of the requirements was to reproduce the lettering on the sign in specific company colors. This moved us to use a printable engineering grade reflective vinyl. We chose Oralite 5600 which also gave us a 7 year outdoor durability and it meet or exceeds Federal specification ASTM D 4956.
The whole project from start to finish took 2 weeks. We met with the client one last time to verify the exact location of the sign. We then marked the hole locations, dug the holes and secured the sign in place with concrete.
The choice of a post and panel sign allowed us to create a sign that met all of the customer’s especially the need to be seen by emergency personnel in the event of an emergency.
