Birds flying into windows is not a new problem, but has been something with little to no solutions over the years. Not only is there a risk of potential window damage depending on the size of the bird, but no one wants to see numerous dead birds piled around your place of business because of reflective windows that birds can’t see. It goes without saying that no one wants their building to be the reason that birds keep dying or severely injuring themselves, and the latest advancements in film technology now offer a solution to this problem. Solar Reflections Services has obtained access to a new film called Birdstrike-X, after extensive research and testing in Europe on its performace to prevent birds from flying into windows. To understand the science behind what makes the Birdstrike-X film work, we must first look at birds themselves and what they can (or can’t) see that causes them to fly into windows so often. Unlike humans, birds can see UV light rays and the reflections of these rays, but normal windows do not reflect these light rays and newer Low-E windows on homes and office buildings have a more mirrored finish, making them even harder to see from a bird’s eyes. These factors combined can turn any home or office building into a hazard for unsuspecting birds flying through the air, and if not resolved can become an even bigger issue for any local ecosystem. This is where the new Birdstrike-X film enters as a simple solution, offering a 98% success rate in detering birds away from any windows where it was applied. This is made possible because of the UV coating within the film itself that allows birds to be able to see it before making impact with a window. To the human eye, Birdstrike-X film is nothing more than a clear sheet of film that will be practically invisible once installed onto a window, but to a bird’s eye, the film has vertical lines/bands of UV stripes every 3 to 4 inches across the entire sheet of film making it visible to birds even from distance. Humans have the ability to see these stripes as well by simply shining a UV light onto the film. For this installation in particular, multiple administrative buildings on the campus of Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama were experiencing bird strikes on multiple windows at a large scale. After installing mutiple test pieces of film to different windows, Solar Refelctions Services was able to install Birdstrike-X film on over 50 windows on campus to not only protect the administrative buildings and their windows, but to also protect and preserve the wildlife and local ecosystem on campus. We were proud to partner with Auburn University to provide them with a solution, and we would love the opportunity to provide you with yours. You may not be able to see the film itself, but you WILL see the results!
