The Most Common Issues with Dodge Challengers

The Dodge Challenger is an iconic American muscle car known for its bold styling and powerful V8 engine options. Since its reintroduction in 2008, the Challenger has become a popular choice for drivers looking for an exciting and reliable performance coupe.

However, as with any vehicle, the Dodge Challenger can develop common mechanical problems over time. At our auto repair shop in Berkeley, CA, we frequently see Challenger owners come in with issues related to the electrical system, transmission, AC system, engine sensors, airbags, and more.

Our expert technicians at Oceanworks have worked on hundreds of Dodge Challengers over the years. We’re familiar with the most common problems these vehicles experience and how to properly diagnose and repair them.

Electrical System Issues

One of the most frustrating issues we see in many Dodge Challengers is problems with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). This computer controls and regulates all of the vehicle’s electrical functions. When it fails, Challenger owners may experience issues like:

  • Airbags deploying unexpectedly
  • Starter failure
  • Power windows and locks malfunctioning
  • Horn honking randomly

We diagnose TIPM issues by checking for diagnostic trouble codes, performing voltage drop tests, and testing electrical circuits. In many cases, we can rebuild or reprogram the TIPM to get it working properly again. If not, we will replace it with a new unit from Dodge.

Harsh Transmission Shifting

Drivers may notice hard shifting, metallic noises, or thumps coming from the transmission around 35,000 miles. This is commonly caused by a faulty transmission control module (TCM) in Challengers made from 2009 to 2016.

At our shop, we start by scanning for codes and test driving the vehicle to experience the issue firsthand. If it is the TCM, we can often update it with the latest software calibration from Dodge to smooth out shifting. In other cases, a transmission rebuild or replacement may be required.

AC System Problems

Another common issue we see involves the Challenger’s air conditioning system blowing warm air, failing completely, or making odd noises. This is typically caused by refrigerant leaks from the AC compressor, evaporator core, hoses, or o-rings.

Our technicians will conduct a thorough AC system diagnosis to identify all leaks and damaged components. We can then repair leaks, recharge the refrigerant, replace the compressor or evaporator if needed, evacuate the system of moisture, and get the AC blowing cold again.

Engine Sensors Causing Check Engine Light

The check engine light is one of the most common reasons Challenger owners bring their vehicles into our shop. In many cases, it’s triggered by a faulty crankshaft position sensor. This sensor monitors crankshaft speed and position to ensure proper engine timing.

When it fails, it causes issues like engine stalling, rough idling, and power loss. Our techs will diagnose the root cause and replace the faulty crankshaft sensor to restore proper performance and extinguish the check engine light.

Airbag Inflator Recalls

Between 2008-2013, Dodge Challengers were equipped with faulty Takata airbag inflators that could explode upon deployment. This prompted massive recalls as the shrapnel from exploding inflators could cause serious injury or death.

If your Challenger is included in the recall, bring it to our shop immediately. We will replace the airbag inflators with new units free of charge. It takes about 1-2 hours and requires removing the airbag assembly. Checking your VIN at NHTSA’s website will let you know if your Challenger is affected.

Leaking Power Steering Hose

Some 2010 Challenger models were recalled for power steering pressure hose assemblies that could leak fluid onto hot engine components, increasing fire risk.

At our shop, we inspect the power steering hoses and confirm whether they need to be replaced under the recall. We’ll replace the leaking assembly and inspect other chassis components like the power steering pump while we’re in there.
