Is your car AC blowing hot air? Seek professional AC repairs from Oceanworks.

Few things are more frustrating than having to ride a car on a hot, sunny day with a nonfunctional air conditioning system. If your car AC is only blowing warm air, the system is low on refrigerant (a highly specialized gas) that holds the AC system together. Let’s dig deeper into how the system works and what you should do when it malfunctions or to maintain it for longevity:

How Your Car AC Works?

Your vehicle’s AC generates cold air by converting the refrigerant from high-pressure, warm liquid to low-pressure, cold gas using the following four main components:

Compressor: When you turn on your vehicle’s AC, the compressor sends the refrigerant to the condenser through a high-pressure line. Even when AC is not in use, the pulley on the condenser stays in motion, and wears out over time. Plus, computer and sensor problems are pretty common in newer vehicles with advanced climate control. The system stops working when the sensor measures incorrectly or stops working.

Condenser: This component resembles and functions like a small radiator and is located between the engine cooling radiator and the car’s grille. It exposes the high-pressure gas it receives from the compressor to the air coming from the grille, quickly converting the gaseous refrigerant into a high-pressure liquid, which is then passed on to the expansion valve.

Thermal Expansion valve: The high-pressure liquid entering the expansion valve disperses into a low-pressure, cold gas. The temperature drops as a result and the cold gas is sent to the evaporator.

Evaporator Core: The cold air from expansion value is pushed through the evaporator core and then passed on to the passenger cabin through the vents. The gas passing through the evaporator core also absorbs heat from the cabin air, converting it into a liquid, which is recycled back to the compressor to begin the process all over again.

If any of the above-explained components fail, it creates a ripple effect.  For example, if the condenser is broken, refrigerant will not reach ideal temperatures by the time it enters the vehicle’s cabin. As a result, the AC will blow hot air. The same can happen if the condenser gets blocked by leaves, sticks, trash, or rocks.
