Suspecting that your vehicle’s brake fluid is running low? Here is everything you need to know about low brake fluid.

Despite its critical importance, brake fluid is one of the most commonly overlooked fluids in a vehicle. Brake fluid is an essential element of the hydraulic brake system and without it, braking will become quite a challenge. In fact, your brakes might stop working altogether if your brake fluid becomes low or your vehicle runs out of it completely.

What Causes Brake Fluid to Run Low?

Here are some of the most causes why your brake system is running low on brake fluid.

  • Leaks in the system. A leak anywhere in the brake system including calipers, hoses, brake lines, and master cylinders can significantly reduce the hydraulic pressure needed to stop a vehicle. Puddles of oil underneath a parked car indicate leaks in the brake fluid.
  • Damaged brake line. Several parts of the brake system can wear down over the years. However, some steel parts in the braking system are vulnerable to rust. This is especially true in snowy areas where roads are salted to melt ice and snow.

Signs of Low Brake Fluid

The following signs indicate that brake fluid in your vehicle is running low.

ABS Light Turns On

Most modern vehicles come with brake sensors in the brake system that work with the car’s internal system to inform the driver of any possible problems. Thus, one sure way to determine that your braking fluid needs a top-up is when the ABS light comes on.

ABS stands for Anti-lock Braking System. A low brake fluid level can trigger the brake light to turn on indicating that you need to replace or add brake fluid in your vehicle.

Pedal Problems

If you notice that it’s recently become difficult for you to press down on your brake pedal, it’s a sign that you’re running low on brake fluid. This mostly happens due to a moisture buildup in your braking system. The moisture then starts to boil up due to the heat, causing the temperature of the system to rise further. The steam that results from the boiling leads to an increase in the brake lines which cannot be compressed. It prevents the fluid from getting to the pads, making it difficult to brake.

Alternatively, pedal problems can even indicate that it’s time for you to replace the existing brake fluid. If you feel that your brake pedals feel softer than before, you definitely need to go for a brake fluid change.

Noisy Brakes

If your brake fluid is running low or needs to be changed, your brakes will start making strange noises. So, if you hear any unusual sounds, you should get your brake oil checked before any further problems arise.

What to Do When Your Power Steering Fluid Becomes Low?

If you notice any of the above signs, make sure to get your brake fluid checked.
