Five brake warning signs drivers shouldn't ignore

Your car brakes can wear down from time to time and it is important to get them replaced.  However, how do you know it’s time for a change? Car brakes can give subtle signs before they completely fail on you. Understanding these signs will ensure that your car is road-safe and no lives are in danger. The following are some simple signs that show it is time to get the car brakes checked:
  1. Fluid Leaks
One of the most obvious signs of brake problems is fluid leaks. If there’s a puddle under your car, observe the color to identify whether it is brake fluid or not. Brake fluid tends to be yellowish in color and may have an oily consistency. Remember that brake fluid leaks are serious and you should call a mechanic immediately. Without any fluid, your brakes are not going to be functional at all.
  1. Lower Resistance
When you press your brake pedals, you should feel some resistance. However, brake pedals are not supposed to get easier to press overtime. If your pedals don’t put up resistance anymore or you can press them almost to the floor, it is time to get your brakes checked. The lower resistance is a sign of low brake fluid levels or issues with the brake hose. Get it checked as soon as possible to ensure that your car remains functional.
  1. Stopping Distance Increases
A good car is able to stop within inches of the when you press the brake. It does depend upon the speed and velocity of the car. However, you shouldn’t feel like you need to press a minute or two before you reach the signal to stop. Your car should stop within seconds. If you’re having too many close calls or just having difficulty getting your car to stop, get your brakes checked. This is a serious issue that must not be overlooked.
  1. Rubber Burning Odor
This is one of the biggest signs that something is wrong. The smell of burning rubber is also very prominent, making it hard to miss. This happens when your brake pads have completely worn down. It also means that they are unable to cause enough friction to stop your car. Eventually, the brake pads will wear down on the tires as well. It is better to get your car checked as soon as you smell burning rubber.
  1. Pulsing or Vibration in the Pedal
If you’re pressing your brake pedal and feeling it vibrate or pulse in an odd manner, you need to get your brakes checked. This happens when the rotors of the brake are either bent, warped or have become damaged in some way. This then means that the brake pads do not have a smooth surface area and this causes vibrations. Even though it sounds harmless, it is better to have your car brakes checked. Conclusion When it comes to your car brake, there are a lot of subtle signs that can show when it is malfunctioning. Regardless of whether it happens regularly or occasionally, if you see any of the signs mentioned above, head to a professional car mechanic near you.
