Within the wall coverings segment, picture walls are often utilized as a focal point for the room. Picture walls are high-resolution photographs, blown up to the size of an interior wall and printed on vinyl or fabric wallpaper and applied to the wall. Picture walls can add an impressive and impactful visual appeal to a room.
To achieve this, the key is not the material the image is printed on, although a quality vinyl or textured fabric should be used to achieve a premium look, but the image itself. Once an image is chosen, it must be resampled to the size of the actual wall and must display crisp detail without any blurriness to achieve the desired visual impact. At a minimum, the image should be of a high enough resolution so that it results in 300 PPI (pixels per inch) when blown up to the actual size of the wall. This can be easier said than done.
For example, at
Insight Signs and Graphics we decided to add a picture of a cityscape to a wall to our showroom. We chose a fairly large wall at 10 ft high and 15 ft wide. At this size, we required an 18000 x 12000 pixels sized picture (13 MB). To find a picture of this size without breaking out budget was no easy task. We undertook an exhaustive search for cityscape pictures of this size on many online image stores including Shutterstock, istockphoto.com, Getty images before finding a large cityscape of Dubai on canstockphoto.com.
Other options exist. In the scenario described above, we were limited to Adobe Photoshop to resample the source photo to the full-size wall. However, other software such as Alienware’s BlowUp can be has been found to yield images with a noticeable improvement over those resampled with native Photoshop native. Or a professional digital imager can be hired to take a source image file and resample it to the size you require.
