This day and age, there are more options than ever when it comes to electronic devices that are supposed to make our lives simpler. The manufactures promise ease of use, and when things do go wrong, it is difficult to find help. When we do find that special ‘800’ tech support number, we are greeted with 15-30 minutes of hold time, followed by talking to someone who can barely be understood. Or even better, your warranty is up, and you must pay to get tech support.
We are over inundated with technology. I am living proof that having the latest, greatest toys doesn’t always make tasks easier. For instance, in the business I’m in, we have dozens of gadgets we rely on. Cell phones, desktop computers, printers, scanners, network infrastructure, internet modems, etc., etc. And all it takes to put a damper on your day is for just one of those items to begin acting up, and create havoc. I love technology, when it functions. But technology can be one of the BIGGEST time drains when malfunctions happen.
Take our internet for instance. You go to work on a Monday morning, have an agenda in mind, everything is planned to a tee…it will be a productive day! But you pull in, open the door, boot up the computer, and find the internet is down. This can literally suck one to two hours from the beginning of your day very easily if you decide to tackle the problem, postponing everything else that was planned. And that can be with anything you rely on heavily.
So keep this in mind…sometimes less is more. The more technology you bring on board, the more the ship will rock from time to time, and the more time and money you will have to invest to keep it functioning properly. Keep it simple.
