Kitchen Sinks - Faucet Terminology There are basically 3 types of faucets that you can have, which affects the type of sink you will need to select.  There are 2, 3 and 4 hole faucets. 2 Hole Faucets - 2 hole faucets have, you guessed it, 2 holes in the sink.  There is usually one faucet with the handle built in and an auxiliary item like a sprayer or maybe even a hot water spout. 3 Hole Faucets - 3 hole faucets have 3 holes with one for the spout and two for the handles, hot and cold.  It is possible to install a facuet with the handle built in if you have a 3 hole sink and want to change to an integrated faucet.  Typically  there are cover plugs to cover the empty holes where the other handles would have been. 4 Hole Faucets - 4 hole faucets typically have one hole for the faucet, two for the hot and cold handles and a fourth hole for an auxiliary item like a sprayer.
