Powdered milk, also referred to as dried milk, is created by freeze drying regular milk and grinding it into a powder. Powdered milk does not need to be refrigerated. Also, it has a much longer shelf life than liquid milk because of its low moisture content. These characteristics not only give milk more benefits than before, it also gives it more versatility in the kitchen.

How Is Milk Freeze Dried?

This dairy product is first flash-frozen during the lyophilization process used in the freeze drying process. Then, the water is removed as a vapor using a high-pressure vacuum. Essentially, any vapors gather on a condenser, transform into ice, and the ice is then evaporated.    Those who cannot obtain a consistent supply of fresh milk find that its powder form is highly convenient because it can be transported for less money. This milk will stay long when kept in airtight containers, and just a teaspoon can transform your tea, coffee, or shake. Some people prefer it over regular milk, even though it is primarily made of skimmed dried milk, because it adds a certain amount of creaminess to food and beverages.    Most frequently, dried milk is used to make infant formula, candies, chocolates, and even foreign treats like Gulab Jamun and Chamcham. Since dried milk is considered healthier than regular milk, which may be contaminated, many people choose to use it instead of real milk.    Just like with any other freeze dried food, the end products must be packaged and stored properly. Airtight packaging is required to keep the moisture out, ensuring it does not grow bacteria and spoil.

Advantages Of Freeze Dried Milk

Unlike a few dairy products that cannot be freeze dried, like cheese, cream, yogurt, ice cream, and butter, milk can be freeze dried with many benefits! Continue reading to learn more:
  • Fortifying

Fortifying is simple because the milk has been drained and reduced to "dust." Many dried milk varieties have extra vitamins, calcium, or iron to make it easier to consume the necessary daily amounts of each nutrient.
  • Cost-effective

Everyone prefers budget friendly products for the ingredients they use everyday. So here, you can get freeze dried milk at a more reasonable price than fresh milk. As a result, families with limited resources can better meet their needs.
  • Baking purpose

You can use dried milk primarily for a variety of baking purposes. In baked items, adding freeze dried milk does not alter the final product. It offers some flexibility (as well as fridge space!) in the kitchen by being added in dried form or reconstituted and added as a wet component.
  • Easy to carry

Dried milk is great for transportation. You cannot easily bring fresh milk to different places, but it is much more possible in the case of dried milk. Most dried milk products are packaged airtight to keep the product fresh. It is very portable so that you can use it anytime you need to without worrying about spoilage.

Health Benefits of Freeze Dried Milk

The fact that milk powder may be stored without refrigeration is perhaps its greatest benefit. There is no longer the need to take up fridge space when utilizing freeze dried milk or worry about it spoiling.   Additionally, the shelf life of freeze dried milk can last a few decades! When all of the moisture is removed and the food is packaged airtight, the growth of bacteria is prohibited for a long time.   Cooks can be more creative with their dishes while using freeze dried milk, for adding it to dishes can contribute a more creamy texture without adding large amounts of water.
