Tis the season in California when wildfires peak – yes it started early this year, but the dry landscape from months without significant rain are ripe and ready for any spark or ignition. Hopefully, you are prepared and your insurance coverage is in place with limits that you are comfortable with should you have a loss.  If so, great news!

We often get calls once a wildfire starts as some would like buy insurance or raise their limits.  This is great as long as the insurance companies haven’t put a moratorium on binding or changing coverage in the zip code areas where fires are burning.  Moratoriums for insurance companies are put in place to protect them from someone wanting to add, change or place coverage only when their property is in imminent danger. Moratorium notices are continually emailed to us from the various insurance companies – often the moratoriums are not lifted until the fires in the surrounding areas are completely put out.  This means no changes to policies or binding of new policies and that can be very frustrating! Frustrated, Business, Frustration

What should you do?  We advise you to get your policies and coverage in order before it’s too late.  The extra dollars of premium that you will pay are well worth the peace of mind and protection of your home, cars, and property.  We can help you determine the appropriate limits for your home insurance with our valuation models. We have been seeing these valuations increase this year because building materials are very scarce due to the early onset of fire season and the large amount of home upgrades happening as many workers are sheltered in place and working from home these days.

Don’t overlook your auto insurance or boat insurance.  Many people have boats of cars that they remove from insurance after summer, but if they are lost in a fire, you will not have coverage.
