If you have ever been involved in a car accident, you know that it can be an unsettling experience. Even if nobody is hurt and the property damage is minimal, the suddenness of the situation will likely leave you a bit shaken and unable to think clearly. It's best to have a checklist in your vehicle of what to do so that if you need it, the process of getting the right information will be straightforward. First of all, if there are injuries or suspected injuries, it's best to call 9-1-1. Secondly, take pictures if possible. A picture is worth a lot in these situations. In addition to close-up pictures of the damage, take a few pictures of the surroundings including the direction of travel just prior to the accident. While your camera is there, take a picture of the other driver's license plate, state issued driver's license, registration, and insurance card. Ask the driver for his or her phone number as well.   You can provide the same information if requested by the other driver.  Having this information will be very helpful during the claims process.  If a police officer is dispatched to the scene, make sure to get the officer's contact info and police report number as the insurance company will need this information. Some things to avoid....it's not your place to determine fault, so don't accuse the other driver or admit that you have done wrong.  Once you are in a safe place, it's best to write down exactly what you remember leading up to the accident because you will need to provide this information to the claims adjuster at some point.  If you wait and think you have all the details memorized clearly, you may find that it's not so easy to remember the details a few days or weeks later.
