This simply, is known as the color gamut of the printer. When doing color profiling (another topic altogether), some profiling software will actually demonstrate graphically what the printer gamut looks like in a 3D form.
The floating physical area in the picture is the gamut size of this particular device. It represents what this printer can print. The dark areas where there is no fill are colors the CYMK ink sets can not print...it is out of the printer gamut.
One color CYMK has a tough time hitting is Home Depot orange. The closest you can get with that color is a burnt orange, much darker than the classic Home Depot orange. Simply put, that is because CYMK ink, no matter how they are mixed, can match that color. The only way to match Home Depot orange is to use an 8-channel printer (8 separate colors), one of the core colors being orange. The machine with that many channels can hit Home Depot orange all day long...and the gamut size on that machine would be much larger.
