Overview of Our Tune-Up Services for BMW and MINIs

We have all heard the word “tune-up,” but what does it really mean? On older vehicles, such as those from the 1990s and before, a tune-up usually consisted of changing the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and fuel filter every 30,000 miles. However, things have changed since then, as most modern vehicles have distributor-less ignition systems and spark plugs that last 50,000 or more miles. As such, what constitutes a tune-up usually falls under factory scheduled maintenance, which varies depending on the vehicle year, model, and mileage.

For example, this is a typical recommended service interval for newer BMW and MINI models:

  • Every 10,000 miles: Replace the engine oil and filter, inspect the air and cabin filter, and check other fluid levels (brake, coolant, transmission, power steering).
  • Every 30,000 miles: Perform the above and change the brake fluid. Replace the fluid on models equipped with a manual transmission.
  • Every 40,000 miles: Flush and replace the coolant.
  • Every 6 years or 60,000 miles: Replace the engine drive belt(s), air filter, and spark plugs. Change the fluid on vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, inspect the brake pads and rotors, and replace them if needed.
  • Every 90,000 miles: Replace the engine timing belt, hoses, and oxygen sensor(s).

In addition, some items like batteries and tires are not mentioned, and they should be replaced every 5 years or as needed, whichever comes first. Lastly, the information above is just a general guideline, and more specific details about the intervals and recommended services can be found in your vehicle owner’s manual.

Do I Need to Perform Factory Scheduled Maintenance?

We can start by saying that some, such as changing the engine oil every 10,000 miles or less, are critical. The same can be said for timing belts, and while they do not have a finite life like engine oil, they dry out and crack over time. If left unchecked, the belt will eventually snap, causing the valves to come into contact with the pistons. If that happens, costly engine repairs will be needed. As such, sticking to BMW’s maintenance schedule can save a lot of money down the road.

How Can Preventative Maintenance Save Money?

While you may not notice any benefit during day-to-day driving, the idea is to prevent problems from occurring and increase the longevity of costly vehicle systems. Changing the engine oil and transmission fluid at regular intervals is recommended since their lubricative properties degrade over time, leading to increased component wear. Brake fluid has a tendency to absorb moisture, which over time, can cause internal corrosion of the brake calipers or master cylinder. Performing an engine tune-up, such as replacing the air filter, spark plugs, and oxygen sensors, yields benefits like improved acceleration, fuel economy, and reduced emissions. Likewise, a routine service usually involves inspecting other components like the suspension, brakes, and looking for fluid leaks. Therefore, it is an opportunity to identify and remedy potential issues before they turn into more serious problems.

Do Factory Scheduled Services Have to be Done at the Dealership?

No, consumers are not required to have their vehicles serviced at the dealership. In addition, your warranty will not be voided if the repairs are performed by an independent repair shop.
