Brake Systems 101

  • Rotors are gripped by brake pads to slow your BMW. Rotors are usually made of cast iron for long wear and good heat dissipation, but there are other options for specialized usage.
  • Brake pads move to contact the rotors when you push the brake pedal.
  • Brake calipers surround the rotors and are where the brake pads are installed. The calipers have pistons to move the pads for braking.
  • Brake hoses convey brake fluid between the master cylinder and the brake calipers.
  • The master cylinder pressures the caliper pistons, which push the pads against the rotors.
  • Brake fluid transmits pressure from the master cylinder to the caliper pistons.

Common Repairs We do on BMW 7 Series Brakes

BMW has taken braking systems to a new technological level. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) integrates power brakes, traction control, and anti-lock braking into an interconnected system. Computer control allows individual brakes to be applied to avoid loss of traction on slippery surfaces.

DSC is a terrific system that provides unparalleled safety until it malfunctions. A system failure can lead to totally inoperative brakes. To avoid this possibility, we will inspect your BMW 7 brake system with every oil change, recommended at six-month intervals.

Brake rotors absorb lots of heat. BMW 7 brake rotors are leaner than those in most vehicles to give you less unsprung weight for improved ride and handling. As they wear and get thinner, the rotors become less able to absorb heat and must be replaced.

Brake pads are a compromise between braking efficiency and long life. The material that contacts the rotors is backed by metal plates that will contact the rotors when the pad is used up. We will prevent this dangerous situation by recommending replacement when the pads reach the wear limit.

The brake calipers are constantly exposed to road dirt and water spray. This results in rust and contamination, leading to slow-acting or even seized pistons. Frequent brake inspections will reveal this problem; we will send you on your way with confidence in your brakes.

Brake lines are made of steel from the master cylinder to the vicinity of the wheels and rubber where they connect. These parts can leak in an older BMW. We will scrutinize these components during a brake inspection.

Brake fluid is a specialized liquid designed to be non-compressible to transmit pressure from the master cylinder to the caliper pistons. Because brake fluid absorbs some of the heat of braking, it must have a high heat tolerance.

Because chemistry involves compromise, hot brake fluid readily absorbs atmospheric water. As seals break down, their material dissolves into the brake fluid. Over time, these contaminants result in corroded brake parts, so we recommend replacing old brake fluid every two years.
